HAS SCIENCE MADE FAITH IN GOD IMPOSSIBLE?

There are things that science alone cannot answer. For this reason, religion still coexists with science to give meaning to our human questions.

This week was like an unusual Saturday evening instead of picking a topic. We started the discussion with a movie called “The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind.” The film is based on the true story of William, a Malawian boy who was expelled from school in 2001 during a drought and famine. William uses his knowledge of local circumstances and global energy generation to build a windmill that he connects to a solar power pump to provide water for his village and fields.

In this movie, we can see three things involved in solving the drought and famine—one through the cult of Gule Wamkulu, an ancestor worshipper who danced to call out the rain. The Second was praying to God for rain, and the third was education in science. Among all these three, it was science that solved the drought and famine in the village. So, do you still remember what your ancestors did when there was no rain during that time? Among us, some said in our culture, some make sacrifices so that it will rain while other one we tied rope to a tree and then pulled it like a tag of war to call on the rain.

Now, after getting all the information and knowledge through science education, do you still think those things are relevant today? If you say no, does that mean science and religion cannot complement each other? If yes, science and religion do not contradict one another, and why is it?

One of us gave an explanation in my Islamic faith that our Quran prohibits eating pork meat, which is counted as unhealthy, which is proven in science later on why we should not eat pork meat. On the other hand, the other person from another faith responded I'm afraid I have to disagree that is always true. It doesn’t always complement each other science and religion. As for I am a Baddish, we do not worship Buddha and don’t have the concept of God, but we follow the teaching of Buddha on how to live a good life.

So, at the end of our conversation, these are the questions one must ponder. Has Science Made Faith in God Impossible? If yes, how will you answer the following questions: Why does the universe exist? How consciousness developed and why the universe is so well-suited for life. Overall, it is clear that there are things that science alone cannot answer. For this reason, religion still coexists with science to give meaning to our human questions.
